What’s the Deal? A group of citizens and local and state environmental organizations, has been lobbying the Indiana County Commissioners to ban all gas well drilling inside “Conservation Zones” (areas of private property surrounding Indiana County parks). Since its inception, the CZs have allowed gas well drilling and dozens of wells have been drilled safely and without impact to the park. However, on June 23rd, the Commissioners directed the county Planning Commission to revisit the zoning ordinance, opening the door to a ban of gas drilling in the zone, which would render your gas rights worthless. It is currently under review and the Commissioners have asked for a recommendation by October, which could means 18 square miles of private property owned by hundreds of taxpaying Indiana County residents could be stolen away from them, along with the chance at a better life for them and their families. |

Will Marcellus Drilling Impact the Parks? Currently there is no drilling allowed within 500 feet of the park boundary, which in most cases means a setback of about a quarter mile from the lake. We believe that additional common sense regulations would help to make sure that landowners can harvest their vast resources while not impacting the sanctity and serenity of the county’s beautiful parks. We support the Indiana County Commissioners in their decision to update the ordinance to reflect this new style of drilling, but we strongly discourage them from entertaining the extremist position of an outright ban. Such a ban is grossly overbearing and will strip hundreds of TAXPAYING Indiana County residents of their property rights for no good reason. Please join us to stand up for your rights and the rights of your neighbors.
